Ideal for providing weather protection for pedestrians and for linking buildings together, the cost of a covered walkway depends on several factors. Before costs can be assessed you will need to consider the following aspects.
Materials: from glass to aluminium
For clear covers you will need to choose between polycarbonate and glass. Highly practical and long-lasting, polycarbonate has many advantages. It is virtually unbreakable, and it is lightweight, so it can be used where it might be difficult for heavier glass to be supported. If your walkway will be used by children or will have heavy items passing through or stored inside it, polycarbonate is an ideal choice. It is well suited to highly functional units, such as a superstore walkway or shelters which incorporate cycle storage. Polycarbonate is more expensive than glass, but for some projects it is worth the additional cost.
Alternatively you could opt for toughened safety glass or laminated glass, which is designed not to shatter if it gets damaged. Glass is an ideal option if you want a more traditional appearance. Advantages of glass include better light transmission and greater scratch-resistance. For walkways which are in areas more prone to vandalism, super strong perforated steel sheets are an alternative to consider.
Shape, Size and Style
Size is the most obvious factor in the cost of your walkway, because of the additional cost of materials as well as extra installation time. You will also need to take into account that larger walkways may need a more complex support structure, which could incur additional costs.
The shape of the walkway will affect the cost of your project too. A straight walkway is quicker and cheaper to construct than a walkway which incorporates bends in the design. The look and style of the roof also plays a part in the pricing. You can choose from a rounded barrel roof or a pitched roof style (including mono) which includes guttering in the construction.
